NHIS information

NHIS at UNILAG, in plain language.

The most important healthcare policy affecting Nigerian federal employees is also the most misunderstood. Here is what your coverage actually includes at UNILAG Medical Centre, what it does not, and how to make it work for you.

What is covered

What is not

When something is not covered, we will tell you up front. You decide whether to proceed privately or follow the alternative we suggest. No surprises at the till.

How to register

Four steps to make NHIS work at UNILAG.

1

Confirm UNILAG as your provider

If you are a federal employee, your HMO must list UNILAG Medical Centre as your designated facility. Update via your HMO portal or HR.

2

Bring your NHIS card on every visit

Your card and a valid ID are the gateway to accessing covered services. No card, no claim — that is how the system is structured.

3

See your primary doctor first

All NHIS journeys begin in our outpatient clinics. Your doctor decides what is covered, what needs a referral, and what falls outside the scheme.

4

Use the pharmacy refill service

Repeat prescriptions can be requested through our pharmacy desk. EMR access means we already see your active prescriptions.

Pharmacy refill request

Repeat prescriptions can be processed without a full consultation. Bring your NHIS card and your prescription reference; we will check your EMR file and dispense the same day where possible.

Got an NHIS question?

Coverage, billing, claims, dependents — anything. Our front desk routes NHIS-specific queries to a specialist who handles them daily.

NHIS frequently asked

Quick answers.

What is the difference between NHIS and NHIA?

NHIA is the regulator. NHIS is the scheme. Practically, your card and HMO are what matters at the point of care.

Yes — dependents registered under your HMO plan are entitled to the same scope of services on production of their NHIS identification.

We will explain why, suggest alternatives where appropriate, and dispense privately if you prefer the original. You always have a choice.

Your UNILAG doctor issues an internal referral. We coordinate the receiving facility — you do not have to navigate that bureaucracy alone.
